Today’s question is “What do you do to get into your creative zone?” Submitted by Lars Carl Schmid in Switzerland 🇨🇭
I wrote this song for the Bushwick Book Club's most recent concert featuring songs inspired by Lindy West's book Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman. (Pictured above, you'll see her sitting right in front of the stage! No pressure!) Lindy West is most definitely one of my modern heroines. She writes these killer articles for the New York Times and always has such important, powerful things to say.
Oh you guys... today is a treat! Many of you know that last spring I stole myself away to go live with my Atlanta family and care for my grandpa (aka Poppop.) One of the really beautiful parts of being near this side of the family was that I got to hear all these stories that I hadn't heard before. I mean, I had heard the stories, but hadn't heard them with such detail!
Songwriting, authoring, teaching, mentoring: these are the things I have to offer. I know I could do almost anything else, but the pull of song and story is much stronger than my resistance to it. So I happily fall in love. Every day I fall in love.
