No one is a stranger to moments of terror and “stuff” hitting the fan. Fear will rear its ugly head no matter your background, upbringing, career path, or goals.
But how do we get brave without getting reckless? How can we encounter life with great abandon and wise courage? How do we stand for ourselves and others without having a panic attack? What does bravery even mean? How do we recreate it? Is it born or built?
Author & singer-songwriter Emily Ann Peterson asked these same questions in 2013 after a life-altering, career-halting diagnosis of a degenerative neurological disease in her right hand. As a full-time cellist, her music career was forever changed. Unbeknownst to her, it was changed for the better.
Knowing she’d have to “be brave,” but not knowing what that really meant, Emily Ann got curious. Really curious. Surviving an eating disorder, starting a music career during a recession, and venturing into uncharted territory post-diagnosis are just some of her personal feats of bravery. Unveiling these stories of everyday heroism, she paints a clear and vibrant picture of what courage looks like for those who don’t feel courageous. (Hint: True bravery never feels brave.)
Bare Naked Bravery: How to Be Creatively Courageous is an extremely vulnerable dive into what bravery means, how it looks, and how to build it with a daily practice of expression and mindfulness.
Now a singer/songwriter and teaching artist for fellow courageous creatives, Emily Ann takes readers and listeners of the Bare Naked Bravery podcast community beyond the walls of vulnerability, using wide imagination and sharp skills of improvisation.
The content was too convoluted and drawn out for me. I greatly appreciate the authors vulnerability and sharing of her struggles (it's empowering to know I'm not alone). In a nutshell, the message I got was show up, be gentle with yourself, manage by your expression and be vulnerable. All excellent points, but buried in the padding
This book came into my life at the exact moment I needed it! Lots of things were taking place that had me doubtful of myself and my skills. I feel like each chapter peeled away at my worries and fears like an onion. I love Emily's descriptive language. I could see her stories in my mind's eye as if I were watching a movie. She not only keeps your attention but gives such great information on how to grow your bravery. She generously gives lots of resources that helped her along the way. I would highly recommend this book!
An astonishing book packed with real stories, humor, and the actual steps and practices that will help you understand and build your courage to face just about anything in life. I expected another self-help book - but this is not that, it is a clarion call to you to wake up out of your comfort zone and seize the day, even if you are terrified. I loved the stories that made this real, as well as the author's generosity in sharing her resources. Not to be missed.
This book is beautifully written, touching, and practical all at the same time. The author has a way with words that draws you into her personal story of eating disorders and having to overcome losing her career as a cello musician due to a medical diagnosis. She then uses her story to talk about the types of bravery and how you can practically cultivate bravery in your own life. If you've ever struggled with fear, this book will help you look deep into yourself and find the courage to live the life of which you dream.
What a great book about bravery. It takes courage to be vulnerable in front of others but if you do you will connect more deeply with others. The author did a great job in expressing her vulnerability in her life and sharing powerful stories on overcoming fear and worry. It takes courage to be your self, and this is book has definitely been an eye-opener for myself in looking at my current fears in my life. I highly recommend this book!
WOW! If you have gone through struggles of any kind and felt like you were not good enough, this book is for you. Emily bares her soul, her fears, her hurts and her frustration to show you anyone can have Bare Naked Bravery. Insights into her life's struggles are very emotional at times, yet it shows us how we can all lift ourselves up and find our Bravery to tell the world to kiss off, I am better than you think and I am going to show you. I could not stop ready this book. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, it comes on when you take charge of your life and show your Brave side.
I couldn’t flip my little finger fast enough last night while flying though gem. It’s hard to get out of bed sometimes. She gets it. You will need this book sometime in your life, and I KNOW you know someone who might need that extra nudge to shine right now. Give this book to them. Emily Ann’s words were love and truth from that friend that you don’t often get to see, but catch right back up with over coffee. We read through her struggles and learn with her how we can embrace ours too, past and present to get down to that nitty-gritty, honesty, creative, brave individual we were meant to be.
What a wonderful read from a tremendous author. Emily writes in a straightforward, no-BS, tell-it-like-it-is manner, yet still remaining warm and inspiring ... I felt like I was reading the personal pages from one of my BFFs! As a creative entrepreneur myself, I can relate to the struggle of trying to remain courageous when facing tough situations. Emily brings this struggle to life with her own battle with tremors (threatening her lifelong passion of music and playing cello). I loved this book!
This girl is funny! I always enjoy a book that's out to help it's readers AND throw in several servings of humor along the way. Much appreciated. Nothing worse than a self-improvement book that reads like a textbook.
Now, about the content. The author does an amazing job being vulnerable so we can better connect with her message on bravery. I particularly enjoyed the section on resonate bravery --seeing someone else do something brave helps me to be brave as well. It's infectious. I'm going to have to re-read this one. There's just so much to take in! I love it!
This raw and vulnerable book is a powerful expression both of WHY we all need more bravery in our lives as well as a resource for HOW to find and nurture our own bravery, no matter what the circumstances of our life look like. It helped me recognize and acknowledge the times in my life where I had been tremendously brave (even if I did recognize the bravery at the time). It also helped me realize sometimes constraints are a good thing and a powerful tool to move forward, even when on the surface you think they are holding you back.
If you want to find your own bravery and learn to show up more in the world, I highly recommend this book. Emily Ann Peterson is just the guide to help you on your journey.
This book is BEAUTIFUL. Emily Ann gives her readers just enough of her to make them fall in love. She shares her stories in a way that makes them feel like they're your own. We’ve all got imperfections, flaws, and limitations – it’s the nature of being human. And we’ve all been knocked sideways by what author Emily Ann Peterson calls “life’s dream-crushing restraints” including illnesses that rob us of our livelihood, death of a loved one, a lover’s rejection, a friend’s cruelty, car accidents, broken bones, arthritis, anxiety, depression – you name it, you’re going to experience it if you live long enough. But life hands us something else, too: the courage and resilience to use our vulnerability and our fear to imagine, create, and move forward into exciting new adventures in our lives. In her memoir Bare Naked Bravery, Emily Ann draws on real-life experience to write with honesty, intelligence, and pluck about how to overcome adversity by facing our fears, flaunting our mistakes, and becoming our authentic selves. In the end, it is not just for ourselves that we need to develop a strong skill-set of courage and resilience. “You need to be brave,” she writes, “because someone out there needs you to be brave.” Bravo!
One thing the world needs is courageous, humble people who do what it takes to make a difference. Emily Ann is one of those people, a young woman with an inspiring story and a welcoming approach. Her down-to-earth, practical guide to living with courage and creativity is an inspiring read for anyone wanting to change their life and help serve the world. Read it!
This was a really good book! Easy to read because I felt like the author got me. I have faced so many fears, and inasmuch as I feel like I've got this.... I still need to conjure up new levels of bravery (feels like daily these days!) She reminded me that indeed being brave is a choice.
My favorite chapter was on Improvisation and how we can use it to create more bravery. As a former actress, I found that the tension and the thrill of what may happen next in an improvised scene were some of my favorite experiences. Being able to recall those feelings and apply that to the other ways I can bring that improv skill into my life (to become more brave) was a concept that I never realized I already had within me to do!
This book is an intelligent observation of the mechanics of bravery. Emily Ann is both the curious observer and the subject of the experiment, and shares her story in a vulnerable, yet upbeat way. This is not someone’s rant–she paints vivid pictures with rich language and sticky metaphors.
Emily Ann created an incredibly in depth analysis of all the pieces and parts that free you and your bravery. She helps you look at your own, which parts of it are really bravery, how have you been dealing with it, breaking it down, experiencing it and especially building it. If you haven’t looked at your bravery before, well, now you can create your own assessment, and that will breakthrough your way to more bravery!
Bare Naked Bravery invites you to grab your heart in one hand and your courage in the other and face your inner and outer challenges with a smile. Let Emily Ann's book be a fairy godmother that offers a clear pathway to not only be brave, but to also resilient, self-loving, curious, and playful.
Finally, a book to awaken each of us to the bravery we hold within and our capacity to be courageous through the hard things in life. You can live beyond the hurt. Emily Ann shows you how.
Most of us have lost our courage in this pampered modern world. But instead of making us feel bad for not being brave enough, Emily Ann Peterson compassionately encourages us to face our fears. She elegantly notes that it’s ok to feel, but that we can be more of the people we want to be if we courageously move toward our fears. This book is informative, personable, funny, and, most of all, inspiring. I highly recommend it.
Bare Naked Bravery invites you to find your inner courage and face the multitude of challenges in your life, whatever they may be. Whether you're dealing with illness, loss, pain, or struggle, these concepts can help you make it through. Emily Ann teaches you to be brave when you need it the most. It's a must-read!
Bare Naked Bravery is an empowering, inspiring guide to transcending fear and overcoming struggles. Emily Ann Peterson explores what bravery really is and how you can achieve it. Her writing is beautiful and raw - the vulnerability of her life truly shines through. A must-read for all.
Despite having spent years studying fear to write a book about it, Bare Naked Bravery still gave me transformational new insight into the art and science of courage. Emily’s storytelling is authentic, moving, and highly engaging. Not only will this book entertain you, but it will also give you clear, practical, and actionable frameworks on how to transcend your fears and rise above every challenge. Bare Naked Bravery is an invaluable guide to living a more courageous life filled with greater joy and meaning.
She’s able to dig deeper and shine a light on the issues others might avoid. It takes bravery to talk about topics that may make others uncomfortable, and Emily Ann has the chutzpah to do it. Best of all, though, she is able to tackle those tough subjects in a kind, loving, compassionate, and tender-hearted way. That’s a special gift.
Emily Ann Peterson has soulfully brought to life her own real, raw, honest journey to Bare Naked Bravery. Reading this book is not only inspiring as hell, but the stories she shares are giant reminders that you're not alone. It'll make you laugh, cry, and pour yourself a glass of wine while you pretend you're sitting across from her, ugly sobbing during the best soul chat of your life.
Part memoir, part empowering how-to, Bare Naked Bravery sets the groundwork for transcending fear in your own life. Emily Ann Peterson explores bravery with vulnerability, humor, and grace.
