Covered in Clover
The Album Diaries: Track 2, Day 2 of 10
The Story Behind The Song Bruise Easy
Welcome to the secret page of Day 2's Covered In Clover album diaries!
Today's song-of-the-day was originally on my self-titled EP which was released in 2015. We recorded each of the songs on that EP in one take(!!!) and put the corresponding video online. The videography and audio production for that EP was done by my friend Chris Mathews Jr.
This version of the song on Covered In Clover is different. In such a good way! I love the earlier version of the song, but this version is...
- a bit faster.
- There is A CHOIR OF HORNS <swoon>
- lots of strings
- drums and bass
- and an electric guitar lick that will make you go "yeah..."
...all of ^that^ turned this totally heartbreaking breakup ballad into an anthem of a victory and steadiness. Both awesome versions.
But this was my first time recording my own songs in a studio. It was my first time producing my own songs. and folks are right about studio recordings... The magic that a studio album can do on a song is truly incomparable.
This song came from one of the most tearful goodbyes I've ever experienced. The guy I was seeing at the time received his dream job offer outside of the country. He and I made the choice to keep seeing each other for the remainder of his time in the US... even though we knew the exact date of the end of our relationship. We both knew a long-distance relationship just wasn't in the cards.
The choice to be in that relationship and say goodbye in the way that we did, is still to this day, one of the bravest things I've ever done.
Needless to say, airport goodbyes will never be the same. And... it feels really good to release this version of the song.
I really hope you like it.

The Lyrics
When we said our goodbyes, I heard the silence start to ring
When we said our goodbyes, I felt my cheek begin to sting
I was bracing for the blow, but it hit me hard
Adrenaline was pumping and it hit me hard
Don’t worry, I still sing
my chest is tight but I can still breathe
Go on, I’ll be just fine
I may bruise easy,
but we didn’t break a thing
You left just in time for my heart to still beat on it’s own
You left just in time for the ache to stay dull in my bones
I was bracing for the blow, but it hit me hard
Adrenaline was pumping and it hit me hard
Don’t worry, I still sing
my chest is tight but I can still breathe
Go on, I’ll be just fine
I may bruise easy,
but we didn’t break a thing
The room stopped spinning
& I’m still standing
I’m almost steady now, steady now
