29 Things You Won't See Me Do This Year

I have officially completed 29 years of life.

This makes today the beginning of my 30th year.

Dude.

3 decades ago there was no internet.

Someone asked me the other day what I’d be doing next year.

The only thing I could say with any certainty was that I knew what I WOULDN'T be doing in a year.

29 things you won’t see me do this year...

(and a few of my...

Further Prompt Challenge: This is a fun one! Queue up your iTunes library or Spotify playlists. Shuffle them and use as many song titles as you can to make a story, song, essay, poem.

Check out what the Reddit community came up with!

(& If you just can't get enough prompting, apply the The Muse's Plot Spline, Struxxture, LyriCloud, and Titular tools to this prompt too!)

Feel free to share...

Getting Artist Time When Your Week is Super Busy

Getting Artist Time When Your Week is Super Busy.png

This Week: Holy crap.

3 performances. Day-job clients with exciting projects. Lessons with music students. Talking with producers and engineers. Business bookkeeping...

Oh, that reminds me, 2014's taxes are also breathing down my neck. Awesome.

In full sarcasm, "Sounds like a great environment for making art, doesn't it?!"

Regardless of your artistic medium or level of ‘pro-ness’ in your art career, life can get really busy.

But that fact certainly doesn't take...

Prompt: Hell Hath No Fury... At All.

In an effort to...

  1. collect my favorite writing prompts
  2. write more often
  3. share in the act of creativity

I've decided to share my weekly writing prompts!

Some weeks, you'll actually catch a glimpse at what comes from my own stab at the prompt.

& just 'cause I'm an artist and I do what I want, some weeks, I won't. ;)

This week's (song)writing prompt...

Hell hath no fury... at all.

THIS hard?! No way.

So here we are. It's February.

I'll be honest with you: being an artist living with heart & hustle is one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a surprise that it's hard.

Oh no no no. I KNEW it would be hard to book shows in towns that I've never been in...

but THIS hard?! No way.

I've been sending out emails for months now. We're talking hundreds of emails. Rehearsing songs daily. Writing almost daily....

On Recording and 4am Bedtimes

You are reading the words of a morning person.

Evidently, if you stay up long enough... low & behold!

It's the morning, the best time of day!

Monday and Tuesday nights we set up recording gear in the sanctuary of Immanuel Presbyterian Church and three microphones over their beautiful grand piano.

We got to work.

On the 15 that made the semi-final cuts for the album...

Sometimes My Weeks Look Like This. and I Love It.

Does anyone else get in a manic work-mode from time to time?

I might be in the midst of one of these seasons right now. I take that back. Not even 'might be' I totally and completely am in the midst of one of these manic work seasons.

I wake up. Pee. Get coffee. & Then get to working. Until it's time to repeat the whole process.

Thankfully, I've got the assistance of Kristin and Alicia on a couple days a week. They're helping me ride this manic work-mode...

2014 in Review: Summer & Fall

Summer

Continuing with the Annual Review, Summer was one of the best. But again, one of the hardest.

I was coming out of my artistic retreat, returning to "life-as-normal."

It was a jolt to be sure. Financially, I was looking for a day job. Rent had to get paid.

While at The Guild, I noticed that all my strength and energy had previously been spent on keeping myself afloat via teaching a full-time studio of students, etc. I was able to set aside my ego in order to...

2014 in Review: Winter & Spring

2014 in Review-Winter & Spring.png

For the last 7 years I've done what I call an "Annual Review."

I've done it so many times now, I've got it down to a ceremony of sorts. It takes after Chris Gillebeau's version, but with it's own Emily-twist.

It's kinda involved.

I basically look at my entire year financially, relationally, time-wise, artistically, etc. I get out old receipts, look through the whole calendar, scan through emails, and more...

All the while, I'm asking myself...

"What went well? &...
