The Story Behind The Song Other Woman

Welcome to Day 6 of the secret album diaries of Covered in Clover.

Today’s featured track might be a controversial, pearl-clutching topic...

I went through a couple of really unfortunate experiences just before writing this song. On separate occasions, I was romantically pursued by married men from within my local community. They would reach out to me via Facebook messenger as a friend and then it would become clear they wanted to be more than just friends.

As a single lady who wants to trust men and the institution of marriage... it was tragic every time. and it contributed to a lot of lonely grieving during that season. My heart broke not for them, but for the whole broken mess of relationships.

These men weren’t interested in me, they were interested in the idea of me, whatever that was.

<insert deep breath here>

On a lighter side of things, although this song is a ballad, I took great solace during these times by listening to many female artists.

This experience is also one of the reasons I love Dolly Parton so much. Her song Jolene is the flip side of this Other Woman story. I’ve always admired her ability to enforce boundaries with men, especially in the music industry. She’s one of the reasons why there’s a mug in this album’s merch bundle... so you can pour yourself a cup of ambition!

I know this may be a strange request, but if you’ve got a story about drawing lines in the sand or enforcing boundaries with difficult conversations, I’d love to hear it.

(Shhh!!! This is for your eyes & ears only!)

The Lyrics for Other Woman

I don’t want to be the other woman

But you call me when your sheets are cold.

It’s not me you really want now.

She just won’t hold you anymore.

She can’t bear to feel you close

& she froze all the warmth of your days

Here you are knocking at my door.

Take this blanket, don’t be cold anymore.

I stand strong. I will hold my ground.

I might be just another woman

I stand strong. I will hold my ground.

I might be just another woman,

but I won’t be your other woman.

I don’t want to be the other woman

Arrows drawn - one black, one blue

I can see, names are rarely choice now.

‘Cause I’ve got scarlet on my chest.

She can’t bear to feel you close

& she froze all the warmth of your days

Here you are knocking at my door.

Take this blanket, don’t be cold anymore.

I stand strong. I will hold my ground.

I might be just another woman

I stand strong. I will hold my ground.

I might be just another woman…

but I won’t be your other woman.
