The Story Behind The Song Shade of Silver

Welcome to Day 5 of the secret diary for my album Covered in Clover!

During my research for my book Bare Naked Bravery, I kept coming across all these phenomenal stories of personal heroism. However, one of the darker sides of doing brave things is that often you feel like you don’t belong.

This is because bravery requires you to do different things or do the same things differently than the rest of the world. It can leave you with this feeling of “between-ness” like maybe you aren’t welcomed or less than.

This is true especially for people who are born into bodies that don’t feel like home or aren’t accepted. It’s also true for people who are born into families or cultures that don’t fully accept their personhood.

If you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong or like you’re between worlds. This song is for you.

All the research I did for Bare Naked Bravery kept pointing to the fact that this kind of bravery -- between-ness -- is the most powerful gift we can offer the world around us... why?

Inbetweens hold everything.

They have access to both sides of a story or experience. This kind of access to the world is profound. Especially if we are willing to bring life to these gray areas.

When I asked my friend Jess Aldredge (of Gospel Songs/Tooth & Nail Records) if he’d be willing to arrange orchestral parts on one song for this album, he picked this song to arrange. It meant so much to me that this song has the kind of orchestral arrangement it deserves.

I really hope you like it.

The Lyrics for Shade of Silver

Edges ache and ribs break inside out

from black and white fences

Should you ever need someone standing by your side

I’ll be right here tugging on the line

Oooo…

We’re all a shade of silver

& Inbetweens hold everything

Yes is overrated.

No is overrated.

So maybe…

Quilting pins take the magic from the sky

Fear will freeze your heart

When your gray starts to seem too blue

I’ll be right here dancing next to you

Oooo…

We’re all a shade of silver

& Inbetweens hold everything

Yes is overrated.

No is overrated.

So maybe maybe maybe...
