4 Lessons From Tom Waits on Finding Your Voice

4 Lessons From Tom Waits on Finding Your Voice

I decided to go about learning from him in a rather strange way. Before I piped his songwriting into a pair of headphones, I listened to as many of his interviews as I could. I got sucked into an epic informational vortex...

How All This Got Started...

How All This Got Started...

You know, that person with a perpetual obsession about a new "thing" or project? I'm one of those entrepreneurs. I've never had a full-time job as a traditional employee. Successfully too! At this point, I'm pretty proud of that badge of honor…

New Song! "Tell Me Again"

New Song! "Tell Me Again"

I wrote this song for the Bushwick Book Club's most recent concert featuring songs inspired by Lindy West's book Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman. (Pictured above, you'll see her sitting right in front of the stage! No pressure!) Lindy West is most definitely one of my modern heroines. She writes these killer articles for the New York Times and always has such important, powerful things to say.

It's the Day After the Day After.

You should see my Facebook feed. Every artist I know (which is a lot of them) are taking arms with paintbrushes, poetry, song, and even knitting needles. My friend Kaitlin tagged me in a challenge alongside this quote from Toni Morrison...

6 Reasons Why a Song is The Greatest Gift You'll Ever Give

6 Reasons Why a Song is The Greatest Gift You'll Ever Give

One of my favorite parts of my job as a musician is writing songs for people. No, not for the greater public to enjoy via Spotify or at a house concert of mine, although I love that too. My favorite part about being a songwriter is...

Masterclass in Minimalism & Songwriting

Masterclass in Minimalism & Songwriting

I've pulled the trigger on some rather large lifestyle changes. Without divulging too many details (ones not yet ready to be revealed) I can say that Marie Kondo and minimalism have been heavy on my mind.

"Don't Ruin Your Career Before It Starts."

"Don't Ruin Your Career Before It Starts."

Every day for 14 days, the Western Washington University's performing arts building is soaked in Brahms, Bach, Tchaikovsky, and more. There are more kids than practice rooms. and the music and rehearsal schedule is so rigorous that every nook and cranny of the building is utilized to its full capacity... Including this loading dock I stumbled upon while on a coffee break, which @lecalethica has boldly claimed for her practice space. Just imagine harp wafting through the sky and down onto the Puget Sound... 😍

New Song: Little Bit

New Song: Little Bit

Alternative Blog Post Title: "I Don't Have Time To Write Songs for a Kids Album! ...Or Do I?" I've got a lot going on these days - writing a book and getting ready to release a new album. As part of raising funds to release this album, I've set an album pre-order level for anyone to commission an original or cover song.

The Biggest Reveal I've Ever Done On The Internet... No, Really.

The Biggest Reveal I've Ever Done On The Internet... No, Really.

This week last year I was gleefully holed up in the Columbia City Theater with a handful of musician friends recording a certain album, *cough cough* MY album.

Yes, it's been a year. Although time has certainly flown, this day could not have gotten here any slower. Every step of the way has felt like molasses rolling down the sidewalk.

I returned home yesterday afternoon from a gorgeous 10-day Artist Residency on Orcas Island, WA.

It was sooooo needed.

Mile High Confessions

Mile High Confessions

I am a mile above earth's surface and there is a well-dressed stranger sitting next to me. He’s attractive. He’s not wearing a wedding ring. He’s sleeping. If it weren't for that airplane window, he’d be leaving a trail of drool across the Midwest. It’s all very endearing.

Lessons From The Road: Planning Ahead Doesn't Always Work

Oh, the innocence! Oh, the hopes! Oh, the inexperience! Ha. It makes me stressed even thinking about trying to do it all again this year.

Public Crying & How to Regain Composure

So there I was... listening to brilliant neurosurgeons speak to a room full of people diagnosed with Essential Tremor. We were having brunch.
