1st Bach Suite + Modern Dance = :-)
15/03/10 09:12
For the past year and a half, Karin Stevens and I have collaborated in various ways. We performed an abridged version of the 1st Bach Cello Suite last year -- Karin was dancing solo. It was beautiful.
Afterwards she requested that I improvise for her Tuesday morning classes. On class day, I would noodle around while they warmed up & then once class got started I’d pull out my trusty gig-book for some time-signature specific dance work. I’ve continued to help her out in this way and love it. It’s really quite an amazing exercise for my technique, posture, and general cello chops. Kinda the equivalent of an oil change for a car - something every musician should do from time to time.
Being a musician for a dancer or dance class is a totally different experience. Of course timing is everything. So I really have to watch my tempo - a lot more than I usually do, I’m ashamed to admit. Somedays I’ll feel like taking it a bit slower, I mean just a hair slower - sure enough they notice! :-)
Karin Steven’s choreography truly is inspired. As I’ve been writing the press (for the Fremont Abbey, my “day job”) in an effort to get some coverage on her show, I’ve said that she will be around for awhile. And I really believe she’ll end up being a big deal. I’m honored to be part of her beginnings. I’m looking forward to the rest of our story together.
Friday and Saturday night will feature me playing the entire ~16 minute 1st Bach Cello Suite and her dance company. You guys should really get a chance to come out at see it. It’s gonna be great. Here’s the info:
Friday March 19th & Saturday March 20th
7:30pm at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center
